How it all began

A trip to Montreal, Canada, in October 2013, as a volunteer at the Parkinson's World Congress, proved not only to be an exciting, emotional and empowering journey, but the impetus for the birth of the Barbados Parkinson's Trust.

Given the opportunity to meet some amazing people from around the world affected by this challenge, to attend lectures and workshops headed by some of the movers and shakers in the field of Parkinson's research, was the thrust needed to bring awareness about this insidious disease to the Barbadian people.

The result was the inaugural Barbados Parkinson's Awareness Walk/5K Run in Speightstown, St. Peter March 8th, 2015.

Continuation

After a successful Inaugural Awareness 5k Walk/Run in 2015, we hosted another event, the 5k LOVE Walk/Run event on February 7th 2016 at Sunset Crest St. James. As we continue with our efforts to raise awareness about Parkinson’s Disease, there are some plans in the offing; a car wash, flee market and the Barbados Parkinson’s Annual Event, scheduled for February 2017. More information about this event will be posted on our Facebook page, as well as on the website. ….

In April 2015, The Barbados Parkinson’s Support Group was established. The support group, is spearheaded by Deanna Krywy, a Canadian whom I met in 2013 at the World Parkinson’s congress in Montreal. She has been blessed with a small team of dedicated members who are working diligently to offer support. The volunteers, some of them afflicted with this challenge and others who are caregivers, assist in providing the necessary resources available to improve the quality of the lives of people with Parkinson's. It is a place where the members can interact with each other in activities, seek support in health matters and most importantly be treated with dignity and given the security that they are not alone. Meetings are held at 3pm, every third Saturday of the month at the Parkinson’s School complex the Pine, St. Michael.

On January 7th 2016, The Barbados Parkinson’s Trust and Support Group, formerly known as the Barbados Parkinson’s Awareness Walk (BPAW), became a registered charity in Barbados, with a Trustee Board of 7 people. Our goal is manifold. To provide a support system where those with Parkinson’s can feel safe and comfortable, to provide the correct medical care, to continue hosting events to bring awareness, to provide a burgeoning student with funds to study neuroscience or make it possible for a PWP to attend the International Parkinson’s Congress or any other Parkinson’s related events.

One of our long term goals, is to unite with other Caribbean Nations to combat the ravages of this challenge through awareness events and programs.

We are always looking for volunteers to assist us. If you are interested, do not hesitate to contact Deanna at 4287957 or via email.Barbados_Parkinsons_Disease_SG@hotmail.com. Should you know of anyone with Parkinson’s, please encourage them to become a member of the support group.

We urge all to join the Parkinson's community by connecting with others whose lives are affected by Parkinson's. If you are coping with Parkinson's, you are not alone. We are here to assist and support you... all you have to do is reach out.
